Area Attractions

Venda offers the most scenic areas like the Mukumbane Kraal, Lake Fundudzi, The Holy Forest, Waterfalls and a spectacular look-out point. Please note that curtain areas can only be accessed with a 4x4 vehicle and accessibility relies on the weather. Tour guides and tours can be arranged with the Limpopo Tourism board, but is subject to availability of guides and vehicles. Tours to see these attractions can be arranged.

  • Phiphidi Waterfalls (pronounced “pipeedie ”)
    Situated on the Muthshindudi River on the main road towards Dzanani, about 12km from the Hotel. As the area is sacred to the Venda People, visitors are asked not to remove any clay pots they may find, or pick any plants.
  • Thathe Vondo Forest
    The number of cars permitted to enter the area are sometimes restricted.
  • Vuwa Arts and Crafts
    The craft house of the Venda People, specialising in traditional Venda arts and Crafts, basket ware, pottery, painting, beadwork, plants and clothing.
  • The Holy Forest
    Ancient burial ground of the VhaVenda. A road passes through the forest, but no one may enter on foot - even the “down to earth” confess that the forest has a “strange atmosphere”.
  • Funduzi
    The Sacred Lake of Fundudzi may be seen from the viewpoint in the Thathe Vondo. Non Venda’s are not allowed to the lake shores unless special (and rare!) permission has been granted by the Priestess of the Lake.
  • Venda State Nursery
    Cycads and tree ferns are prolific in Venda. Permits are issued to persons purchasing cycads. The nursery is situated on the Louis Trichardt Road, about 5km from the hotel.

KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

The Punda Maria Gate is approximately 76km from Khoroni. Punda Maria Camp lies in the northernmost part of the Kruger National Park, 10km from the Punda Maria Gate. The Camp is in the Sandveld Region, which is often described as the botanical garden of the Kruger National Park. Numerous plant species abound which are unique to the area. Game species most lightly to be sighted include impala, zebra, buffalo, elephant, eland and sable. The area is also a birder's paradise.
